• Resumen

  Según el discurso de las autoridades coloniales -que la historiografía sigue reproduciendo - a mediados del siglo XVIII se inició la guerra contra los apaches en la provincia de Nueva Vizcaya, ubicada en el centro-norte del virreinato novohispano. Sin embargo, una relectura del contexto permite discutir esta idea y reconstruir el entramado de intereses particulares de varios capitanes de presidio y de otros poderosos locales, a quienes convenía incentivar la idea de la guerra y de la presencia del enemigo para mantener sus privilegios y asegurar cierta autonomía frente a la injerencia creciente de la corona. Se hace hincapié en la figura del capitán del presidio de San Francisco de Conchos. José de Berrotarán, autor de un famoso informe dirigido al virrey de Nueva España en 1748.

• Abstract

  According to the speech of the colonial authorilies -on e that the historiography continúes reproducing- in the middle of 18"' century began the war against the apaches in the province of Nueva Vizcaya, located in the center-north of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Nevertheless, an alternative reading of the context allows to discuss this idea and to reconstruct the framework of particular interests of several captains o (presidi o and other powerful residents in the area. Those people agreed to stimulate the idea of the war and the presence of the enemy to maintain privileges and to assure some autonomy to counterbalance the increasing interference of the crown. The paper centers on the figure of the captain of San Francisco de Conchos presidio. José de Berrotarán. author of a renowned repon directed to the viceroy of the New Spain in 1748.
